Ice Climbing

“Ice is time solidified.”

- Gretel Ehrlich -

Canmore and The Canadian Rockies are an ice climbers paradise.

Paramount Guides can introduce you to this exciting and popular sport. We have something for everyone from beginners who want to get a taste of ice climbing and learn the basics to customized days for experienced ice climbers who want to learn new techniques or who want to challenge themselves and accomplish a much desired objective.

Discover new heights while discovering a new passion.

Intro to Ice Climbing:

Ice climbing is a lot like rock climbing but on ice.  You climb on frozen icefalls, frozen waterfall and rock formations that are covered with water that has frozen. You still use ropes and harnesses but instead of light rock shoes you use boots with crampons and instead of using your fingers to find the perfect hold on the ice you use an ice axe in each hand and instead of fixed bolts you place ice screws for protection.

When you ice climb you swing the ice axes to bed them in the ice and then kick the front points of your crampons into the ice to securely set them.  Don’t be dissuaded in trying this sport because of your physical strength.  If done properly it can feel like climbing a ladder as it is all about the technique which makes learning from a professional super important.
