Introduction to Ski Touring

Have you just started exploring the idea of Backcountry Skiing and have started with an AST1 course and now want to head to one of those distant slopes you see from the highways of the Canadian Rockies. Our introduction to Back Country Skiing is for you. Our ACMG Mountain Guide will help you build on your AST course with terrain selection based on snowpack, weather, terrain, etc. This full-day in Kananskis will give you an introduction to what is out there that you will then be able to build on.

Ski Touring Day

This program includes:

  • Professional ACMG Mountain Guide

  • Full-Day (7-8 Hours) $215.00 + GST

  • Minimum Group Size 3 - Maximum Group Size 6

Cost does not include:

  • Transportation

  • Food

  • Personal Back Country Equipment (Skis / Split Board / Boots / Poles etc.)

  • Mandatory Avalanche Safety Gear (If you would like to rent it from us the cost would be: Avalanche Beacon $10.00 / Avalanche Shovel $5.00 / Avalanche Probe $5.00)

Our ski touring day takes place in a backcountry winter environment. Conditions can be harsh, and you need to be dressed appropriately. Being warm and comfortable will enhance your enjoyment.

Logistical details

Location: TBD Depending on if we are heading down Hwy 40 or the Spray Lakes Road, we will meet at 7:30 at either the parking lot of the Casino at Hwy 40 or in the parking lot at the Canmore Nordic Center.

The night before your guide will send out a few options of areas we could visit. You will need to access the appropriate information such as avalanche conditions and weather forecast. Then in the morning, a group decision will be made.

Transportation: Due to Covid 19 protocols we will not be able to carpool and therefore be prepared to drive to the trailhead.   

Food: Bring snacks and a lunch, plus 1 to 2 liters of fluids.

Clothing: You should come prepared for a full day in the outdoors.

Equipment List:

  • You will need either Skis or Split board plus ski poles.

  • Day pack large enough to hold spare clothes, lunch, shovel, and probe.

  • Avalanche transceiver with batteries over 80%

  • Collapsible Avalanche shovel.

  • Avalanche probe.

  • Sunglasses and/or ski goggles.

  • Personal 1st-Aid Kit for small blister (our guide carries a 1st-Aid Kit for emergencies, plus a communication device).

  • Warm clothing
