Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue
“What we must learn to do, we learn by doing.”
- Aristotle -
This course has been designed to provide participants with the tools to understand different types of glaciers and how they evolve, move and change. How the surrounding terrain and climate shapes them and how to read a glacier so that you can travel and camp on them safely.
You will learn different techniques depending on terrain, and your abilities and knowledge. From how to “rope-up” your team to the pros and cons of two and three-person teams. As well as how snow makes a glacier safer or riskier and how to analyze various situations.
The course will also cover how to properly and safely react if someone falls into a crevasse. We will practice simple scenarios and gradually advance to more complex situations so that you can help your partner in this situation, and when self-rescue is more effective and faster.
This is a full day in the field following a well-established curriculum, but it is flexible to accommodate students’ knowledge and experience.
